Introduction

RDA Today!

Helping others is one of the best ways to keep fit and gives you a great feeling inside. I help with the Riding for the Disabled(RDA) at Thornton Farm near Rosewell. Will put links up as soon as! Do you know of people who help or are disabled or do you have any fundraising ideas for the RDA in general throughout Britain?

Awh rubbish Gem you're right - my post isn't here! I'm so upset, I spent ages working out how to send a comment too! I'm so stupid at computers...

Anyway, I wanted to say that the site looks impressive - really professional! More photos of our lovely horses and ponies please!

I feel that this you have made up a fairly comprehensive and informative site here and you really seem to know what you are talking about. This has particular importance to me a my brother is disabled and often is taken riding by his school which he enjoys thoroughly and gives him something to look forward to. The only thing that I would say would be that when I first saw the link to your site I assumed it was information relation to recommended daily allowance, ie the 5 a days, and the calories and the salt levels, etc. Just thought I'd let you know.

Thank you 'anonymous'. Where about does your brother go riding? I have had a couple of comments about RDA as recommended daily allowance but I think a shorter title is easier for people to remember so when I spread my blog site around I will mention what RDA stands for.

What are the safety procedures for the children involved, when they are on the horses

Gemma Shand said...

Thats a really good question! It's not just children involved. All riders must wear a hard hat - the typical hat designed for all riders. For certain riders side walkers are required incase the rider slips or decides that they want to come off - now I've been there when thats happened a few times. You can strap riders into the saddle to help them stay on the seat but I don't know too much about that as I have never been there when one has been used. Hope that helps!

Strapping riders into saddles is not recommended - I have only seen it once, with a Swedish gentleman who had disabilities related to the use of thalidamide by his mother, at the World Championships in Sweden 1987. Riders do occasionally fall off or as you said even jump off but we try to rebalance them before they leave the saddle or hit the ground - that is what sidewalkers are for - as well as showing riders how to steer and stop the horse.
RDA is also keep fit for carers and volunteers!!
